Tema Energy and Vertiv completed a major power & cooling infrastructure upgrade for a telecommunications operator

A major player in Romania’s telecommunications market needed a modular, modern data center infrastructure that included high-performance power and cooling components. At the same time, this infrastructure had to be capable of supporting future phased investments without compromising existing availability. The project, delivered by Tema Energy in partnership with Vertiv, is documented in full in a case study published on the Vertiv website.

Why retrofitting has become a priority

Compute capacity demand is growing faster than many data centers can keep up with, especially those built a few years ago on cooling architectures designed for much lower rack density. This isn’t about greenfield projects — it’s about infrastructure that’s already operating and needs to be brought up to current performance and efficiency standards without stopping operations.

Most of the problem comes down to cooling systems. Rack density has increased, but many rooms are still running on older cooling systems. The result: high energy consumption, hard-to-control hot spots, and a shrinking margin between installed and actually available capacity. Given today’s energy costs and growing pressure on efficiency, retrofitting cooling systems has become one of the most direct ways to recover capacity and reduce operational risk, without the investment of a new site.

What the project showed

The collaboration with the telecommunications operator confirmed an approach Tema Energy applies systematically: efficiency doesn’t come from a single component, but from integrating power, cooling, and monitoring into one unified system. Replacing a single cooling unit or adding an isolated UPS line isn’t enough; the architecture needs to be standardized so it can be replicated from one site to another, regardless of the growth stage.

The strategic partnership with Vertiv provides the building blocks needed for this kind of standardization: containment solutions, power distribution, modular UPS systems, row-based cooling. Tema Energy adapts these components, project by project, to the specific conditions of each site — available space, target density, phased budget, redundancy requirements — combining Vertiv’s mature technology with local design, integration, and service expertise.

This combination of cross-domain competencies — power, cooling, automation, maintenance — is what sets the Tema Energy team apart. A retrofitting project doesn’t end once the equipment is installed; long-term performance depends on ongoing maintenance, visibility into rack-level consumption, and the ability to respond quickly, locally. Continuous service, backed by authorized Vertiv partners, turns an integration project into a long-term operational relationship.

For companies operating mission-critical infrastructure in Romania, retrofitting existing data centers is no longer a question of “if,” but of “when” and “how.” Full technical details of the project are available in the case study on the Vertiv website.
